A new impact crater!

I was wandering on Google Maps like many do. Around January 2024, I saw a clear circular feature in the Grenneville geological province. The feature is near the village of Magpie in the region of "Côte-Nord" in Québec (Canada).

It has 2 circular formations. A central rim with a central lake (Marsal Lake) and an outer rim with a general depression. The Magpie river is clearly ocupying a section of the depression.

I was skeptical as I have no usefull geological knowledge. So I searched for meteoritical crater lists and databases. It wasn't listed anywhere! So I wrote a few emails to some expert organisations like the Geological Survey of Canada. Finally, the CEREGE, a french research team contacted me. They said that they asked samples from the canadian government. They received some from mining surveys in the region. They said that the stones are some "brecccia" which may suggest an impact event (impact breccia). It was good enough to write an article about an hypothesis to be presented at an annual event for crater experts, the METSOC (July 2024).

Then the researchers invited me to propagate the news. I ended up to communicate with medias. I did an interview with "Radio-Canada" in a scientific radio magazine called "Les années lumières". Here is the link to listen to it : radio interview.

Then, news websites began to spread the information: CBC, Radio-Canada, LaPresse, LeDevoir, Actual News Magazine, InfoBref, Le Nord-Côtier, Le Portageur and Ground News.
